How To Defeat The Devil
“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have
come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” ~Jesus
Right before Jesus tells us that He came to earth so we can enjoy life to the fullest, He clearly warns us of an enemy—a thief—the devil. If you are a Christian and you don’t take the devil’s work seriously, or you ignore him, you will eventually become bamboozled, disoriented, looking around wondering, “What just happened?” and, “Why things are falling apart? I don’t understand?”
You must begin to recognize your enemy! He is highly organized and very intelligent! He is like a mad scientist, formulating the best temptations and troubles to trip you up. He holds board meetings with his demons to strategize your most painful demise. He has studied and memorized the Bible—verbatim—and his goal is to take Scripture out of context in order to make you hate God, ignore Him, or to be petrified of Him. Satan tries to trick you into making dumb choices that will destroy you based on God’s Word being twisted! He even tried doing this to Jesus! (See Luke 4:1-13).
RECOGNIZE YOUR ENEMY! HE IS HERE TO RUIN YOUR LIFE! HE HATES YOU WITH EVERYTHING HE IS! HE WANTS YOUR SOUL IN HELL! Jesus said that Satan is the father of lies, and that he doesn’t even have the ability to tell the truth! (See John 8:44). Jesus also said the devil only has three main objectives for his disgusting existence: STEAL. KILL. DESTROY (see John 10:10). Spiritually, he is always hard at work—mostly in our minds. This is where the battle rages and where we must grow each day, becoming stronger and stronger in Christ as time goes by (see Romans 12:2, Philippians 1:6).
But we are not powerless! We have weapons! Weapons which are not carnal, but spiritual (see 2 Corinthians 10:4,5). From the moment we place our faith in Jesus we are fully equipped with every weapon we need because He then lives in us! Now, we just have to allow the Holy Spirit to teach us how to let Him live out of us. This takes time, but it is possible as we allow the Holy Spirit to guide our actions and attitudes. And when we begin to do this, the enemy stands no chance! He becomes an ant, Christ in us becomes the boot.
The Apostle John, goes so far as to call us overcomers because he said, “He who is in us, is greater than he (Satan) who is in this world!” (See 1 John 4:4). The Apostle Paul, builds on this by saying, “put on the full armor of God, so that we can take a stand against the devil’s evil schemes…(we are) strong in the Lord and in his mighty power!” (See Ephesians 6:10,11 emphasis added). We have nothing to be afraid of, ever! That’s why Jesus said this all the time! Christ in us gives us the authority to stomp on Satan’s head–spiritually! (See Luke 10:19).
So just how do we do this? John tells us: “through the blood of Jesus and by our testimonies” (see Revelation 12:11). As believers, Christ’s blood has “sealed us up in heavenly places until the Day of Redemption” (see Ephesians 2:6, 4:30), there’s step one. So what’s next? Our testimonies! We gotta tell people what Jesus has freely done for us!
Once we begin to use our testimonies, so that we are relatable, we move forward by overcoming evil with good! (See Romans 12:21). We gotta do good things! (See Ephesians 2:10). The more evil that hits us, the more good we should be doing! THIS IS HOW WE FIGHT BACK!
But most of all, in order to defeat the enemy and allow Christ to live through us in His most pure form, we gotta love people. Paul said that without love, his words and actions mean nothing (see 1 Corinthians 13). We must love. We must. We must love God, people, and ourselves. They all link together, and the love of Jesus should be the bond.
So today, my friends, know this: The devil is a sissy. Do not be afraid of him! Instead, run at him like David did Goliath! Use the Word of God, praise, thankfulness, and prayer, as the rocks in your slingshot! Don’t cower away from hell, but instead, attack hell—not people, not sin—but hell. Let Jesus live through you gracefully and you’ll accomplish this feat organically. You see, once Jesus is sealed up inside your heart, by grace through faith (see Ephesians 2:8,9) the devil and his demons can’t get in there. Once Jesus lives in you, Satan becomes like the Wizard of Oz, a weak old man behind a curtain, making loud noises and blowing smoke…harmless. Sure, the devil and his demons can try to poke at you, prod, scream and shout, but CHRIST IN YOU is not sharing your heart—He finished you at the Cross, you accepted Him, and now He is staying forever. So don’t be afraid. (See John 19:30, 2 Timothy 1:7, 2:13, Hebrews 7:25).
A prayer for you: God, I want to thank you for making your home in me. I know that because you are always there inside my heart, I am strong. No matter what or who I face, I have all the power, weapons, and armor that I need to protect myself and demolish every stronghold—which is you IN me. I’m never without JUST the right amount of strength needed to make it through anything. You always give me grace, upon grace, upon grace! And it is your grace which allows me to do ALL THINGS THROUGH CHRIST—including overpowering the enemy and leaving him discouraged each day. HE IS NOTHING. I AM EVERYTHING—all because of your Holy Spirit in me! Right now, I ask that you infuse your graceful power into these dear readers. For those who can’t fathom this, reveal it! For those who doubt this, increase their faith! And for those who are afraid, give them courage to simply take a step forward, and then another, and then…another. You love us! And we are so grateful for the abundant life you’ve given us, through Jesus. Amen.
