Who’s Opinion Matters The Most?

Elijah came near to all the people and said, “How long will you hesitate between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow Him; but if Baal, follow him.”…

1 Kings 18:21

I used to be a slave to the opinion of others. If I heard that someone was talking bad about me, my heart would immediately sink, I’d scramble and fret–then, I’d do my best to try to make that person like me–or, I’d resent them, hold a grudge, and do my best to make sure other people didn’t like them. That is, if I couldn’t change their mind about me.

I was a puppet, the devil’s puppet, completely blind to the fact that the opinion of people did not define me, at all.

If the enemy can get us to worry about everyone’s opinion of us, then he can keep us upset. Staying upset keeps us weak. Weakness then makes us powerlessif we are powerless, we won’t be able to enjoy the abundant life Jesus came to give us! And we won’t be doing anything good for the Kingdom of God!

So as Christians, there is a question we need to ask ourselves: “Who’s opinion matters the most?” and then a follow-up question, “Why?”

Once we establish the true answers in our hearts and minds, absolutely everything in our lives changes for the better!

The first answer is, “God’s opinion matters the most!” But, do we really believe that? YES! HECK YES! This mindset will not happen instantaneously, it will take a lot of time and practice, but it can be developed!

And it is developed by answering a follow-up question: “Why does God’s opinion matter the most?” Your mental and spiritual breakthrough will happen after the “why” question was answered, and here it is:

“God’s opinion matters the most because He created me. And not just created me for no reason, but because He has a purpose for me being alive. He created me because He loves me! And He doesn’t just KINDA love me, but He loves me so much that He would become a man, take on MY sin punishment, PAY IT OFF PERMANENTLY, and then give me access to a powerful life and heaven for free by grace through faith.”

That’s why God’s opinion matters more than anyone’s, it’s because your value is so high to Him! So high, He just had to create you! Your parents did not create you, they were simply the vessels from which you came! YOU WERE GOD’S PERSONAL IDEA!

OH MY GOSH, THIS SHOULD MAKE YOU FEEL LIKE A MILLION BUCKS! This should make His opinion SMASH everyone else’s! This should make you put your chin up, your shoulders back, and be extremely confident!

The reality is, even the very best opinion of you should seem like a golf-clap to God’s opinion! Why? BECAUSE GOD KNOWS YOU DEEPER THAN EVEN YOU KNOW YOU–AND HE STILL LOVES YOU, AND WANTED TO CREATE YOU!

YEAH BABY!! THIS MAKES ME WANT TO RUN AROUND THE HOUSE!!!

THIS is the seed that needs to be planted in you, which is…UNDERSTANDING YOUR FULL VALUE. And it is my goal with this ministry to plant that seed.

Friend, God loves you despite you. That means, no matter what you do or don’t do–or how many people like or dislike you–God’s love remains. That’s where your identity is, because you can’t lose this. Nothing can change your value to Him, not even your incorrect attitudes and actions. He loves you so much, He gave His Son to save you (see John 3:16).

If I could just get this fact embedded in your soul, this seed of your infinite value, then you will begin to take on the attitude of Christ! And that’s what the Bible says we are to do!

“You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had” (Philippians 2:5).

So if we have the same attitude of Jesus then we are allowing Him to live through us, in turn, we will begin to love even those who have a negative opinion about us—because this is what Jesus does for everyone—yes, everyone.THIS MINDSET CHANGE WILL NOT HAPPEN WITHOUT CONTINUING TO ALLOW JESUS TO LIVE THROUGH YOU.

Having a positive opinion about negative people is something you have to practice (as in “do repeatedly to get better at”) through your faith. Your mind has to be renewed, little by little (see Romans 12:2). But once you get this down pat, by understanding who lives in you, your exuding of Christ will be on a very high level as time goes by! You will then begin to enjoy your life to the fullest!

After that, negative opinions will be like a fly landing on your arm–it doesn’t really bother you–you simply brush it off.

“But Matt, how do I do this?! What if I feel hate towards those who try to publicly and privately destroy me?!”

Friend, I understand. I know very well what that feels like. To overcome this, you must remember that the enemy wants you to act on your feelings in ways that the Holy Spirit doesn’t approve of. He’s attempting to set you up for failure. Jesus, on the other hand, wants you to instead bless those, and pray for those, who cause you harm (see Luke 6:28).

“BUT HOW?! I DON’T EVEN LIKE THEM!”

Simple…begin to think of them with love. Just think…your feelings don’t have to match up with your thoughts. Imagine if Jesus only went off of His feelings, we would not have our free salvation today!

So pay close attention to your thoughts and be on guard! The very moment the enemy places a hint of dislike or resentment in your mind toward someone, just say, “God, bless them,” and mean it. Even if it’s like eating a rotten lemon. Trust me, this works. Just say, “Jesus, help them to come to know you deeply,” or, “Lord, show them how much you care for them,” or, “God, give them the desires of their heart.”

As you do this, you will be doing as the Apostle Paul said and “Not being overcome by evil, but overcoming evil with good” (see Romans 12:21, my emphasis added). This is the key! Don’t take the bait, don’t retaliate, but instead, OVERCOME EVIL WITH GOOD THINGS!

The more evil that comes against you, the more good you should be exuding!

Little by little, by overcoming evil with good, and as the seed of your value in Christ grows in your heart–and as you respond like the Holy Spirit wants you to–you will begin to have a knee-jerk reaction of blessing those who try to hurt you, because you are letting Jesus live through you. But at the same time, you will begin to establish healthy boundaries in your life which will protect you.

This happens when you finally understand your extreme value to God!

So today, my friends, know this: God has a very positive opinion of you! And even better, that positive opinion will never change! Even you can’t change it! As you begin to realize this and believe this, as time goes by, you’ll get to know Jesus better. In turn, you’ll allow Him to live through you even more! After that, the opinion of others won’t matter because you know who you are in Christ. Sure, we all like to be well-liked, but we can’t control the opinion of people. Jesus teaches us to not be upset about anything we can’t control—or, to find our identity in anything we can lose.

You will never lose God’s love for you in Christ, and He will never have negative things to say about you! Begin to enjoy this confident, loving, positive opinion about yourself today! Because it’s the truth!

-Matt

A prayer for you: Well good morning, Lord! Man, I slept GOOD last night! As I got up in the middle of the night to use the restroom, I was just thinking to myself, what a blessing this nice, cozy home is. Thank you so much for my home for. And thank you for teaching me my value in YOUR opinion of me. It’s changed my life. Right now, I lift up all who are reading this, directly to you. For those who struggle severely with worrying about the opinion of people, deliver them from that strangling mindset. That used to be me, and it was pure torture from hell. Who cares what people think, when YOU think good, hopeful, positive things about us–EVEN IN OUR DARKEST HOURS! So, PLEASE, begin to teach these dear readers the amazing value they have to you–no matter what! Make it to where NOTHING and NOBODY can change their minds about how much you love them! In Jesus’ confident name I pray, amen.
